Auditions February 16 & 17
Prairie Players will be holding auditions for their April production of This Random World: The Myth of Serendipity on Sunday, February 16, from 2-4 pm and Monday, February 17, from 6-8 pm at Prairie Players Civic Theatre, 160 S. Seminary Street, Galesburg.
This bittersweet comedy written by Steven Dietz explores the near-misses and unspoken connections that shape our lives. The play follows intersecting stories of family members and strangers who unknowingly cross paths, revealing how chance encounters and missed opportunities define our relationships. With humor and heart, it delves into the randomness of life and the human condition. "The play is equal parts, funny, heartbreaking, and thought-provoking," says Quick. "The characters are all beautifully drawn, three-dimensional people that will be a delight for actors to play."
Production dates are April 4-13.
Director Todd Quick is looking for eight adult actors. "Character ages are approximate and flexible," says Quick. "Character descriptions are also only a starting point as we discover the characters in the rehearsal room."
Character Descriptions
SCOTTIE WARD, a woman in her 70s: Private, quite withheld, intelligent, dry-witted, formal, but not a classic matriarch; she is sassy, feisty, enjoys a full, enriched world beyond the knowledge of her children—a secret world traveler.
TIM, her son, 29: His girlfriend has broken up with him, his work is not going well, he is trying to figure things out, as a joke he puts a fake obituary into the paper and then can’t seem to take it back; he is sweet, thinks of himself as a bit of a loser, still struggling to find himself, but it’s time he grows up.
BETH, her daughter, 38: Single, generally obsessed with controlling her life, and her death, she is about to travel to Nepal, to go off radar and (maybe) to let go of the control; her defense is her best offense, she is appealing, likeable. Seems like she has it figured out.
BERNADETTE, her aide, 30s: She is competent, reserved, Mom’s favorite, according to Rhonda; some call her Bernie. Loves her sister, even if she can’t always express it.
RHONDA, Bernadette’s younger sister, late 20s: Bernadette's younger sister, has become mystical since her mother’s passing, wants to believe in more than just this life, misses her mother, works for a funeral home; believes in ghosts, patient, and empathetic.
CLAIRE, Tim’s ex-girlfriend, 20s: More recently, Gary’s ex-girlfriend; believes in ghosts. A sensitive soul, wounded.
GARY, Claire’s ex-boyfriend, 30s: Doesn’t know what he wants in life; wants to be kind, wants to do the right thing, but doesn’t understand what that is. A little lost.
A MAN, 60s: Another Tim Ward; confused, and maybe a little scared.
Auditions will be reading brief excerpts from the script. No experience or advance preparation necessary! Download the PDF below if you'd like to familiarize yourself with the scenes that will be read at auditions.
