HISTORY
After a nomadic journey with many stops along the way, Prairie Players Civic Theatre has found its home! Our permanent residence at 160 South Seminary Street is situated in Galesburg’s Seminary Street Historic District. This prime location provides high visibility in the heart of the tourist destination campus adjacent to the shopping district. Our neighbors include the Galesburg Amtrak
Depot, Discovery Depot Children’s Museum, Galesburg Railroad Museum, and the future National Railroad Hall of Fame.
Building on Our History
To say our new home presented itself in move-in condition would be a major exaggeration. But Prairie Players leaders had vision. And with a select team acting as our own contractor and the countless hours contributed by our dedicated volunteers, we stewarded our limited resources for the project with great care.
We approached the building renovation project in four distinct phases and, by engaging volunteers in the process, have minimized labor costs. Phase I included property acquisition; tuck pointing; storage for costumes, props, and sets; demolition of existing walls, new electrical service; installing an overhead truss; making the second story usable for office and meeting space; and the purchase of an adjacent 3,138 square foot lot. An in-kind contribution by Trillium Dell Timberworks and personal contributions provided leadership support totaling more than $60,000. We completed Phase I in 2011.
Phase II projects involved completion of the final theatre design; installation of sprinkler and HVAC systems and insulation; a new sewer line and plumbing to the restrooms and concession area; and pouring a concrete floor. The Galesburg Community Foundation and City of Galesburg TIF Financing District provided primary funding for Phase II renovations that totaled $185,000 and were completed in early 2015.
To open the new theatre in November 2015, we completed Phase III, which included the installation of flooring and sound and light technology, and provides accessibility improvements for all of our patrons. The total for this phase was $120,000.
Our 2,200 square foot black box theatre provides endless possibilities to bring a director's vision to life. It also offers flexible rental space adaptable for multiple purposes—rehearsal and performance facility, private events, training and professional development, workshops, seminars, and weddings or other special occasions. The renovated venue seats 120 patrons amphitheater-style or 100 patrons at tables.
Phase IV, completed in 2017, included completion of the front entrance, a 9,000 square foot landscaped plaza with stage—another great space that can be used for a variety of community and private events—a new roof, and a concession/catering area.
